The unbundling of Google Search
Search is becoming plural: answers, agents, platforms, and social systems all competing to satisfy discovery intent.
Discovery used to start in one box. Now it starts in a dozen — ChatGPT, Perplexity, TikTok, Reddit, vertical agents, in-product search.
The single-box era is over
For most of the modern web, Google was the default surface. Optimizing for one algorithm covered the majority of discovery. That coverage is now fractured across surfaces that each have their own retrieval logic and trust signals.
The clearest sign of the shift is not traffic loss — it is behavior change. Users increasingly begin research inside a chat interface, refine inside a social platform, and only fall back to Google for verification.
How to operate across surfaces
Treating this landscape as a single channel is the mistake. Each surface rewards different formats: chat rewards standalone paragraphs, social rewards short video and native posts, product-embedded agents reward structured data.
The operating model that works is portfolio-shaped: a core body of source-grade content, plus surface-specific derivatives designed to be retrieved and quoted where the audience actually is.
