AI Overviews reshape CTR

AI Overviews now sit above the ten blue links for a growing share of informational queries. The answer is often complete before the user reaches a result.
What the data is showing
Across the informational tail, CTR on the top organic result is compressing where an AI Overview is present. The compression is not uniform — it is heaviest on definition and 'what is' queries, lightest on transactional and navigational ones.
Publishers who invested only in ranking are watching that CTR shrink. Publishers who invested in being quoted inside the overview are, in many categories, gaining assisted visibility even as raw clicks drop.
The workable response
Shift the target: be the extracted source, not just the ranked one. That means writing lift-ready paragraphs, structured facts, and named claims that a synthesis engine can quote without paraphrase risk.
It also means widening measurement to track citation share and share of answer alongside rank and CTR.
