Why citations may matter more than ranks

A case for treating share of citation as the primary visibility KPI in AI-mediated search.

Ranks measure position on a page that fewer users see end-to-end. Citations measure presence inside the answer users actually consume.

The KPI shift

Rank is a proxy for visibility that assumes the user reaches the SERP and scans it. Citation is a direct measure of presence in the answer the user actually reads.

As answer surfaces absorb more of the funnel, citation becomes the more predictive KPI.
