A backlink is a vote by a publisher. A citation inside an answer is a vote by a synthesis engine that has already read the entire relevant corpus. That is a much stronger claim about credibility.
This is why citation share is quickly becoming the more meaningful visibility KPI. It captures the model's implicit ranking of which sources are worth repeating.
How to earn them
Named claims, dated statements, first-party data, and standalone paragraphs are the mechanical ingredients. Recognizability across the corpus is the softer ingredient — the model has to have seen you before it will quote you.
The practical playbook: publish claims other sites will echo, invest in original data, and make sure your best sentences work as pull-quotes.
